Register a domain

Search for and register a domain with WebGee, and the settings worth getting right at the point of ordering rather than afterwards.

Register a new domain name with WebGee. Applies to every account.

Register

  1. Search for the domain on webgee.com.
  2. Check the result. If it is taken, the search suggests alternatives — note that a different extension is a different domain, not the same one cheaper.
  3. Add it to your cart and choose the registration period.
  4. Complete checkout.

The domain appears under Domains → My Domains in the client area within a few minutes.

Get these right at checkout

Registration period. Longer periods are often cheaper per year, and a multi-year registration is one fewer renewal to miss. Check the pricing page — the renewal rate frequently differs from the first year.

ID protection. Without it, your name, address, email and phone number are published in the public WHOIS record for anyone to look up. It is far easier to enable now than to remove the data from caches later.

Auto-renew. Leave it on unless you have a reason not to. A lapsed domain can be bought by anyone the moment it expires, and recovering one is expensive when it is possible at all.

Contact details. They must be accurate and reachable. Registries require verification of the registrant email, and an unverified domain is suspended until you confirm it.

Watch for the verification email after registering. Registry rules require the registrant address to be confirmed, and an unconfirmed domain stops resolving — which looks exactly like a DNS fault.

After registering

Point it at your hosting. New domains use WebGee's default nameservers; if your hosting is elsewhere, or on a different server, set them — see Which nameservers to use.

Add it to your hosting account as an addon domain or subdomain, so there is something to serve — see Create a subdomain.

Get a certificate. AutoSSL issues one once the domain resolves to your account — see Install a free SSL certificate.

Transferring an existing domain

Registering and transferring are different things. To move a domain you already own, you need an authorisation code from the current registrar and the domain must be unlocked — see Transfer a domain to WebGee.
