# What virtualisation WebGee uses
Source: https://docs.webgee.com/en/servers/what-virtualization-type-do-you-use

WebGee VPS and cloud servers run on **KVM** — a full hardware virtualisation
hypervisor.

## What that means for you [#what-that-means-for-you]

**Your own kernel.** You can load modules, apply kernel parameters and boot a
custom kernel. Container-based virtualisation such as OpenVZ shares the host
kernel, so none of that is possible there.

**Your own firewall.** `iptables` and `nftables` work normally, including
features that containers cannot support.

**Real isolation.** Memory and disk are allocated to your server, not shared
opportunistically with neighbours. What another customer does on the same host
does not consume your resources.

**Anything runs.** Docker, custom filesystems, swap, VPN software, alternative
kernels — all work, because you have a real machine rather than a partition of
someone else's.

## Practical consequences [#practical-consequences]

* **Kernel updates are yours to apply**, and you must reboot for them to take
  effect — see
[the Copy Fail kernel advisory](/en/servers/kernel-cve-2026-31431) for a worked
  example.
* **Resources are dedicated**, so a busy neighbour does not slow you down. It
also means you cannot exceed your allocation opportunistically.
* **A rebuild replaces the whole disk**, not a container template — see
  [Rebuild your server](/en/servers/rebuild-server).
