# What server management includes
Source: https://docs.webgee.com/en/servers/vps-cloud-server-management-whats-included

WebGee cloud servers are **unmanaged by default**. Applies to all VPS and
dedicated servers.

## Unmanaged — the default [#unmanaged--the-default]

WebGee provides and guarantees the platform:

* Network uptime and connectivity
* The physical and virtualisation infrastructure
* The Cloud Console — rebuilds, backups, console access, networking

**Everything inside the server is yours**: the operating system, its updates,
security hardening, the software you install, and its configuration.

<Callout type="warn">
  On an unmanaged server, **nobody is applying security updates but you**. A
  server left unpatched is compromised eventually — that is not a risk, it is a
  schedule. If nobody on your side will do it, the managed plan is not a
  convenience but a requirement.
</Callout>

We do not access an unmanaged server without your explicit request — see
[Grant WebGee support access to your server](/en/servers/support-access-key).

## Managed — $49.95/month [#managed--4995month]

Adds administration of the server itself:

* **24/7/365 technical support** for the server, not only the platform
* **Operating system updates** applied for you
* **Security hardening**
* **Optional proactive monitoring** of services
* **Up to 3 hours** of technical assistance or consultation per month

The three-hour allowance covers ordinary administration and advice. Larger
projects — a migration, a substantial build — are quoted separately.

## Which you need [#which-you-need]

**Unmanaged** if you have someone who will keep the server patched and knows
their way around Linux administration.

**Managed** if the server matters and nobody on your side owns it. The most
common failure on unmanaged servers is not a dramatic one; it is nobody applying
updates for two years.

## Either way, do these yourself [#either-way-do-these-yourself]

* **Back up.** Server backups are yours to configure — see
  [Back up your server](/en/servers/server-backups).
* **Set reverse DNS** before sending mail — see
  [Networking and reverse DNS](/en/servers/server-networking).
* **Use SSH keys** rather than passwords — see
  [Add an SSH key](/en/servers/ssh-keys).
