# Files WebGee automatically removes
Source: https://docs.webgee.com/en/hosting/understanding-our-internal-auditing-and-cleanup-process

WebGee runs a periodic cleanup across hosting accounts to reclaim disk space.
**This deletes files from your account**, so it is worth knowing what is in
scope. Applies to shared and reseller hosting.

<Callout type="warn">
  Anything you cannot afford to lose should not live only in your hosting
  account. Keep your own copy off our infrastructure — see
  [Download a backup of your account](/en/backups/how-to-generate-download-a-website-backup).
</Callout>

## What gets removed [#what-gets-removed]

**Backup archives**

* `/home/*/user_backups/*`
* `/home/*/backup-*`, `/home/*/cpmove-*` and equivalents elsewhere
* Plugin backup directories, including `backupbuddy_backups` and
  `com_akeeba/backup`
* Files over 1 GB in `/root`, particularly `cpmove*`

**Large archives and media in home directories**

`.rar`, `.iso`, `.7z`, `.tar`, `.xen`, `.mkv`, `.avi`, `.VOB`, `.pbo`, and large
`.zip` files.

**Temporary files, caches and logs**

* `/home/*/tmp/Cpanel_*`
* Compressed logs (`.gz`) in `/var/log` and similar
* `/usr/local/src/*`
* `/home/*/.trash/*`

**Old junk mail**

Messages older than **30 days** in `.Trash`, `.Junk` and `.Spam` folders.

## Why [#why]

Backups in particular are the problem. Plugin-generated backups are full copies
written into your own disk quota, so a handful of runs can occupy more space
than the site itself. They also count towards your plan's limit, which is why
Softaculous backup is disabled entirely — see
[Why Softaculous backups are disabled](/en/backups/softaculous-backups-disabled).

## This list is not exhaustive [#this-list-is-not-exhaustive]

Under the fair usage policy, WebGee may remove other files that are unusually
large, redundant, or a security risk. If you are storing something unusual and
are unsure, ask before relying on it staying there.

## How to keep what matters [#how-to-keep-what-matters]

* **For backups**, use JetBackup. It is incremental, stored outside your quota,
  and never touched by cleanup — see
  [Restore from a backup](/en/backups/jetbackup-how-to-restore-your-account-files-or-databases).
* **For a copy you keep**, download it and store it elsewhere:
  [Download a backup of your account](/en/backups/how-to-generate-download-a-website-backup).
* **For mail you want to retain**, move it out of `.Trash`, `.Junk` and `.Spam`.
  Those folders are cleared at 30 days.
* **For large media**, use object storage or a CDN rather than your hosting
  account.
