# NextCloud is not permitted on shared hosting
Source: https://docs.webgee.com/en/hosting/policy-on-nextcloud-usage-on-webgee-shared-reseller-platforms

**NextCloud may not be used for data storage on WebGee shared or reseller
hosting.** Applies to shared and reseller plans only.

## Why [#why]

NextCloud is a self-hosted file storage and sync platform, and its usage pattern
is fundamentally different from a website's:

* **Sync clients poll continuously**, generating constant requests from every
connected device whether or not anyone is using it.
* **Storage grows without limit** by design — it is where people put files.
* **Background jobs** for indexing, thumbnails and previews run regardless of
  traffic.

Shared hosting allocates resources on the assumption that sites are idle between
visitors. A sync platform is never idle, so a single NextCloud installation can
consume the resources budgeted for many accounts.

## What to use instead [#what-to-use-instead]

**A VPS or dedicated server.** NextCloud is permitted there, and you get the
dedicated resources it needs — see
[Set up your cloud server](/en/servers/cloud-server-quick-start).

**Object storage or a commercial service** if you want file sync without running
the server yourself.

**WebGee Workspace** if the requirement is really shared files for a team —
it includes shared storage and team folders without any of this — see
[What is WebGee Workspace?](/en/email/what-is-webgee-workspace-email-hosting).

## If you already have one installed [#if-you-already-have-one-installed]

Move it to a VPS, or to another service. Leaving it in place risks the account
hitting its limits — see
[Fix a 503 Resource Limit Reached error](/en/performance/understanding-and-resolving-the-503-error-resource-limit-reached)
— and sustained resource consumption is followed up individually.

If you are unsure whether your use case is affected, open a ticket and ask before
building on it.
